Echizen Tansu are chests manufactured in the Japanese City of Echizen and surrounding areas of the Fukui Prefecture. From around the Edo period (about 200 years ago), woodworking craftsmen started making Echizen Tansu using traditional woodworking techniques.Echizen Tansu are characterized by a unique technique of joining timbers such as Zelkova, Japanese cedar and Paulownia without the use of nails or screws, are adorned with ornate iron fittings, and finished with Urushi, a form of Japanese lacquer.
Kakesuzuri is the name of a type of portable safe used by merchants since the Edo period (roughly 400 years ago). It was typically used to store an inkstone, writing brushes, an abacus, notebooks, and money.
